Driving License for Women in Abu Dhabi

Getting a driving licence is more than just learning to drive. According to me, as a woman, driving a car is much more comfortable, safe, and easier than riding a bike, cycle, or scooty. For many women, it represents freedom, confidence, independence, and the ability to do things on their own. For me, it was all about confidence and independence. I wanted to learn to drive to drop my kids off at school every day, so that I could save time and money, and explore Abu Dhabi. The school bus fee was 500 dirhams for each kid, and the bus used to come very early in the morning at 6.40 am, though the school time was 8am. So, if I drop my kids off at school in my car, I can start from home at 7.30am as the school is only 15 minutes away from our home. I already had a driving licence in India, so I was a little confident about driving, but still we have to get a UAE licence if we have to drive our car here. So, I applied for my driving licence when my second daughter was ready to join school and start her education journey.  But getting a driving licence in the UAE or any Gulf country is like passing the toughest exam of your life. It’s not as easy as we have driving tests in India. There are so many rules to follow, so much to do while driving, and so much patience required on the road. There are rules in India too, but people don’t follow them as strictly as they do in the UAE. And the roads here, sign boards, road markings, speed limit boards, etc., are all so well marked and maintained that you can drive very easily on the road.

Living in Abu Dhabi, I realised how useful driving could be in everyday life. Whether it is commuting to work, going grocery shopping, meeting friends, or simply exploring the city, having a driving licence can make life a little easier. But getting a licence is also a journey that comes with learning, patience, practice, and a few nervous moments. Before you start applying for your driving licence, you will have to know a few things about the process, procedure, and fees of getting a driving licence here in Abu Dhabi. You will have 2 options here to apply for a driving licence. One is for people who are completely new to driving and want to learn everything from scratch. These people can opt for a regular driving lesson programme. Another option is for people who already have a driving licence from their country and know all about driving. These people can go for the Golden Chance. In this article, I will explain to you the difference between these 2 options, which option I chose for my driving licence, and how much time and money it took for me. Since I chose Golden Chance, most of the topics in this article that I will cover will be based on this.

How to Get a Driving Licence in Abu Dhabi?

Getting a driving licence in Abu Dhabi can feel like a big step, especially if you’re applying for the first time. Whether you’re a woman planning to drive independently, a working professional, or someone new to the UAE, understanding the process beforehand can save you time, confusion, and unnecessary expenses. The good news is that women and men follow the same general driving licence procedure in Abu Dhabi. Here is a step-by-step guide to getting your UAE driving licence, including the documents, training stages, tests, and fees. I applied for my driving licence after completing 2 years in Abu Dhabi. I applied after 2 years because my second daughter was ready to go to school, and my elder son was already going to school by school bus. So I wanted to drop both my kids off at school myself by car so they could get some time in the morning to rest and have breakfast. If they go by bus, the bus comes at 6.40am, and my son doesn’t have enough time for breakfast, and he doesn’t like getting up so early. So, for applying for a standard car or light vehicle licence:

1. You must be at least 18 years old.

2. You need to meet the UAE’s residency, identity, and licensing requirements.

3. You must have the UAE Pass app installed on your mobile phone. UAE PASS is the official digital identity app in the UAE. It allows citizens, residents, and visitors to securely prove their identity and log in to government and participating private services using one account. You can use it for services such as TAMM, Abu Dhabi Police, and other online services. It also allows you to digitally sign documents and access official digital documents. You can download it from the App Store or Google Play and register using your identity documents. In simple words, UAE PASS is like your digital ID, which helps you complete many services online without visiting an office.

Step-by-step process to get your driving licence:-

Step 1: Open your traffic file

A traffic file in Abu Dhabi is an official record linked to your traffic details, including your driving licence, vehicle registration, and traffic fines. It is used for services such as applying for a driving licence, registering or transferring a vehicle, and managing traffic fines. Once you open your traffic file, your traffic file number will be given to you. It identifies your personal traffic profile. Your traffic file number, also called the Unified Traffic Number, is a unique number that can usually be found on your vehicle registration card (Mulkiya), driving licence, or through Abu Dhabi Police traffic services. Start the driving licence application through the TAMM app or the relevant authorised service channel or website. You can also contact an agent who will help you with this process. You can get these agents’ numbers through your old friends who have a valid driving licence in Abu Dhabi. Or when you go to the driving school to apply, there you will find many agents who are giving their cards to the people going around. I opened my traffic file through an agent. My husband already had a driving license, and he also had the agent’s number who helped him with this process 2 years ago. So, he called the same agent to open my traffic file too. But that agent was no longer working at the driving school, so he gave us another agent’s number. We called the agent and started the process. Since we need UAE Pass to apply, I already downloaded that app on my phone and created my account. The agent submitted all the required documents in the app and made a payment to open my file. After three days, I got a message from AUH_TRAFFIC (Abu Dhabi Traffic Police) that my file has been opened, and I got my traffic file number, also mentioning good luck. Then we registered with Emirates Driving Company for theory classes and tests. We can choose any date and time by selecting the time and day slots given on their website or app.

You will generally need these simple things to apply for a driving license in Abu Dhabi: –

  • Emirates ID.
  • A bank account in Abu Dhabi. If you are a homemaker or dependent, you can use your husband’s bank account to transfer money or to apply for the license.
  • A UAE SIM card in your mobile phone to get messages.
  • UAE Pass and TAMM app on your mobile phone if you want to apply online.
  • Passport and residency details.
  • Eye-test results from an approved Abu Dhabi eye centre.
  • Any additional documents requested for your application, like your home country driving licence if you are applying for golden chance.

Step 2: Complete your eye test

Take an eye test at an approved optical centre. The results are used for your driving licence application. This is the most important part of the driving licence process. Since your eyes are an essential part of our driving journey, they check your eyes to see if you are capable of seeing distant things. If you already have glasses, they will check if your eyesight power is correct according to your glasses. If everything is perfect, they will give you an eye test PASS document within 5 minutes, and you need to pay 100 dirhams for that eye test.  Your payment history and the eye test document will be submitted online too. Confirm the fee with your eye centre, as some charge differently, and check whether they submit results electronically. In Abu Dhabi, I went to an optical shop in the Dalma Mall for my eye test to apply for a driving licence. That was the only optical shop in the mall where an eye test for a driving licence was taken. If u go and ask other optical shops in the mall and tell them you want an eye test for a driving licence, they will tell you to go to a specific optical shop for the eye test. This eye test document should be submitted when you open your traffic file.

Step 3: Register with a driving institute

Once your file is ready, you will receive a message on your mobile phone from the Abu Dhabi Police confirming that your traffic file has been opened. Then register with an authorised driving institute, such as Emirates Driving Company (EDC), and choose the applicable training programme. The Emirates Driving Company is near the Dalma Mall in the Musaffah area. Your training package and lesson requirements depend on your experience and licensing route. You have to book theory classes, simulator classes, and the theory test date and time through the app or through an agent. You can book them according to your day and time slots. The simulator class is compulsory for Golden Chance applicants. Without attending that class, you will not be allowed to take the theory test. You will also get study material for studying after you register. The study material contains one textbook in PDF form in all languages. You can either download it as a soft copy or ask the EDC for a hard copy. My husband already had a hard copy textbook, so I didn’t ask them for anything. I prefer a hard copy instead of a soft copy because it will be easy to read. The textbook covers all topics of how to drive your car in all types of situations, road signs, road rules, Abu Dhabi traffic rules, speed limits, and how to take care of your car.

Step 4: Attend theory classes and pass the theory test

Since I have 2 kids and I cannot leave them alone at home, I preferred Saturday and Sunday for my theory classes and the theory test so that my husband will be with my kids when I am out for 3 to 4 hours. There will be 2 theory classes of one hour each and one simulator class of 40 minutes or one hour. You can book all of them on one day without any gap in between so that you can complete all 3 classes within 3 to 4 hours, or book the simulator class the next day or next week according to your preference. A simulator class is nothing but a classroom with one or more computer-based systems that imitate real driving conditions. It is a 20-minute training session where you practise driving using a driving simulator machine instead of a real car. The machine is just like a little half-car with a big screen in front.

What do you do in a simulator class?

  • Steering: Practise turning the steering wheel.

  • Pedals: Learn how to use the accelerator and brake.

  • Traffic rules: Practise following signals, signs and road markings.

  • Road situations: Experience traffic, turns and hazards in a safe virtual environment.

I booked all 3 classes on Saturday, and it took me 4 hours to complete everything. It took 4 hours because there was a 10- to 20-minute break between each class. There is a cafe inside the EDC, so during the break, if you feel hungry, you can buy something for yourself. Of course, the cost is a little more than in a normal cafe, but the taste and quality of the food are worth it. I bought one small box of dark chocolate cake, one Starbucks cappuccino, and one small box of wheat cookies for myself and my kids. There were also a few ready-to-eat meals like sandwiches, burgers, fried rice, veg mini pizza, salad, and freshly cut fruits.  The tutor who taught us the theory class was very good at her teaching. Those 2 hours were enough to understand each and everything about driving.

According to me, it is better to read the textbook once, before attending the theory class. This will make you confident in the theory class, and you will understand all the topics more clearly. I did the same, and when the tutor was asking some simple questions, I was able to answer most of them and felt very confident. I booked the theory test on Sunday, which is one week after my theory class. If you want, you can book the theory test on the same day as the theory classes. I needed some time to study, so I took one week. In that one week, I studied the textbook twice and did some mock tests online. If you search on Google for a driving license theory test, you will find a few websites that give you a real theory test experience. I did at least 5 of these mock tests to build confidence. In your theory test, you will be given 35 minutes and 45 MCQs (multiple-choice questions) to answer online. In the theory test classroom, each seat will be fitted with a tablet or touch screen where you have to do the online test. The questions will be jumbled. The people around you will get different questions and not the same as yours. The passing mark for this test will be 36. The test is also available in multiple languages. But I preferred English as it is easily understandable. This test will test your driving ability in every way possible. I studied so much for this theory test for almost 2 weeks, but there were still 4 to 5 tricky questions in the theory test that I was not able to answer correctly. All others were very simple, and everything came from what I studied in the textbook, like road signs, road markings, speed limits, and simple Abu Dhabi road rules. And I got 44 answers correct out of 45. They will give you some real-life situations too in the test and ask you what you will do at that time. For me, some of the tricky questions were:-

  • How will you park your car when you are on an uphill or downhill slope?
  • When your car breaks down or loses its electricity on the highway, what will you do?
  • Which car lights will you use when there is dense fog or rain on the road?
  •  How to park your vehicle in the lay-by area of a highway when there is an emergency?
  • How to drive your car during aquaplaning (when there is water on the roads due to rain)?

Step 5: Complete practical driving training

Start learning behind the wheel and practise vehicle control, parking, reversing, turns, lane changes and safe driving techniques. If you take the normal driving package instead of the golden chance, the driving instructor will teach you driving from the basics. They will also teach you parking, and you will take a separate parking test too; you must pass it to start your road test. But if you take Golden Chance, there will be no parking classes or parking test. And you have to take only a few classes before giving the final road test. There are many types of parking that you will learn in the driivng school, like:

  • Parallel parking (parking between 2 cars parallel to the road),
  • 90-degree or perpendicular parking (Parking at a right angle by reversing in),
  • Angle parking (parking your car at a 40-degree angle in a diagonal bay),
  • Reverse parking (Reversing your car into a marked parking space while controlling steering and checking mirrors),
  • Side parking (your instructor may tell you to park the car on the hard shoulder of the highway or the parking space on the side of a road).

Depending on your training route, you may have simulator sessions, internal practical training, and a yard assessment. You can take as many classes as you want to become a more confident driver. For Golden Chance, at least 3 to 4 classes of road training are compulsory. Golden Chance holders don’t take a parking test, so they only do side parking when their examiner tells them to do an emergency stop or park on the side of the road during the road test. I took 15 road classes for my Golden Chance driving license so that I could learn more about road rules and how to drive in the UAE. Because driving in India is very different from driving here in the UAE. The traffic rules are very strict here, and also the roads are very different. For each class, the instructor takes 65 dirhams and teaches for one hour. Many people also take 17, 19, or 20 classes for good training. I took only 15 classes because I was confident about my driving after 10 classes, as I already knew how to drive.

I chose the time at 6 am, early in the morning, for my training because after that, I didn’t get any time, as I have a daughter at home who doesn’t go to school and someone has to be at home with her. I used to go at 6 am and come back at 7 am. Sometimes the instructor might come a little late, around 6.20 am, and then I would come back at 7.20 am. My husband used to be at home with my daughter till I came. He used to go to the office as soon as I came back home. And my son used to go to school at 6.40am in his school bus. I did not choose the nighttime because in the afternoon and evening, I am very busy with my household work and taking care of the kids. So I used to wake up at 4.30am, do my prayers, cook breakfast and a snack for the lunchbox, pack my son’s and husband’s lunchboxes by 6 am, and then get ready for my training. This training went on for 15 days straight without any holiday or break. On Saturdays and Sundays, I used to go out with my family to any restaurant or shopping mall to practice my driving. I used to drive while going and my husband would drive while we came back home. According to me, driving is a real job. Your eyes, brain, hands, legs, feet, and ears all function together when you are on the road. You have to focus so much as a new driver and also look at and memorize the routes. Initially, for me, it was very difficult, but practice made me good at driving. I gained some confidence after a few trips on the road with my family. I love to drive, but I was scared before due to a completely new environment, and I didn’t know the routes. Now, I am fine. I just wanted to be perfect at driving to be able to drop my kids off alone at their school.

Step 6: Complete the final road test

After meeting the relevant training and assessment requirements, proceed to the road training and final driving test. You need to book the road test along with a date and time from the app after you pass your theory test. Then you should start your road training. After the theory test, you will receive a ROAD TRAINING card. This card is compulsory for you to practise driving a car on the road. The card looks just like the actual driving licence. But instead of a driving licence, it will be written TRAINEE PERMISSION (ROAD TRAINING) along with your traffic file no. on the top side of the card. This card will be valid only for 6 months. After 6 months, you have to renew it again if you’re taking your road test after 6 months or after 11 months. If you are giving your road test within these 6 months after your theory test, then no need to renew it as you will get your real driving licence just one day after passing your road test. I got my trainee card 2 days after the theory test. But I started my road training the day after my theory test with a driving instructor. The driving instructor used to come to my house for pickup. I had to drive that car for one hour and come back home. The instructor would sit beside you and explain everything about driving. These trainee cars come with 2 brakes and 2 accelerators. So if you fail to apply the brake at the correct time, your instructor will apply the brake that is fitted below his seat too when there is sudden danger. There are 2 types of trainee cars for you to choose. One is manual, and the other is automatic. I chose automatic as it is easy, and we also have an automatic car at home.

From day 1, the instructor taught me everything that would happen in the road test. The actual time for your road test is just 1 minute. But we don’t know which place you will drive at that time, so that’s why the instructor teaches you all the possible things and places that are used for the road test. They will make you practise roundabouts, intersections, lane discipline, mirror checks, indicators, overtaking, highways, curves, bends, emergency stops, and side parking on the road until you feel confident. For people in Abu Dhabi, the road test will happen only around the driving school and near Dalma Mall. That’s why my instructor taught me to drive only on those roads every day. There I used to practise multiple roundabouts, lane changes, using indicators, overtaking other cars, and emergency stops or side parking. Out of all these, roundabouts are the toughest to drive. Because there are no signals to know which cars have stopped and which are moving. In roundabouts, there are cars that are always moving. So the cars entering roundabouts have to stop before entering and check on their left side for any other cars that are there in the roundabout. If there are cars, you cannot enter; you have to wait and then enter and make a long round turn to exit or do a U-turn. At this time, steering control plays a major role. For new drivers, this might be tough, but when you practise every day with your instructor, you will definitely become a pro. If you want to learn about all these driving techniques, please comment below; I will write a separate article after this and explain all about roundabouts, intersections, parking, and lane changes. I know I am not a pro driver, but I just wanted to help some new drivers who are nervous just like me when I started my driving journey.

Step 7: Receive your driving licence

Once you pass the required final test and complete the issuance requirements and payment, follow the instructions to receive your UAE driving licence. The road test is something many people are afraid of. People get nervous even before the actual road test. But trust me, if you already know driving and paractise everyday atleast for 15 days, you will be confident that you will pass the test. You need confidence and some basic driving skills to pass the test. No need to be a pro or a perfect driver for the test because no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes; even pros make driving mistakes without realizing. My road test was on 21st October, which is on Wednesday, exactly at 9am. On that day, my son had school, so he went to school at 6.40am. After that, I ate my breakfast and got ready for my road test. My driving instructor told me he would come at 8am for pickup and make me practise a little before the final road test. My husband didn’t go to the office that day and took off since he had to be home with my daughter, and also come to pick me up from the driving school after the road test.

So the instructor came at 8 am and told me to bring my Emirates ID and my home country driving licence since I applied for Golden Chance. I drove to the driving school by myself for the test after practising on the road for 15 minutes and there was very huge tyraffic. Every day, I used to practise driving at 6am, and at that time, there was very little traffic, but now around 8am, the traffic was completely packed, especially around roundabouts. I got a little nervous while driving, but still managed to drive in heavy traffic. After going to the driving school around 8.45am, the instructor told me to park the car in the parking area and go inside the building and wait there till they called me for the test.  He also booked a bus for me through the UAE PASS app that would take me to the road test on the road. After going inside the building, they asked me for the bus no and, gave me a token, and told me to wait inside the room. After a few minutes, at 9am, they called me by my token number and asked for my Emirates ID and Indian driving licence. After checking, they told me to get on the bus.

I, along with 7 other women, went inside the bus. There, we got our assigned numbers for the test. They usually go in alphabetical order. Names that start with initial letters have to go first for driving. Since my name starts with T, I got the last number. The bus started at 9.30 am. All the 7 of us got different places to drive, and each drove only for one minute. The first number should exit from the parking area and drive outside on the small road. The bus will follow the smart driving test car slowly till we all complete our test and drop us back at the school. So the women who finished their turn have to come back on the bus and wait till everyone finishes their turn, or if they have family members who are following the bus from behind, they can go with them after the test. The second number drove on a big road, the third number drove on a curve, the fourth number drove on a roundabout, the fifth number drove on a highway, the 6th number drove on a bend, and the last number, that was me, had to exit from the side parking on the road, drive a little on the road, and then go inside the driving school and park the car at 90 degrees. Everything went well, and I was also confident about my result. My husband and my daughter were waiting in the car in the parking area for me.  We all went home. My husband dropped me and my daughter off at home and went to office at 10am. I waited for my PASS message on the phone, but it never came. I slowly started getting a little nervous, but my husband suddenly sent me a message on WhatsApp congratulating me on passing the test, sharing a screenshot of the website of the Abu dhabi traffic police where my file no. was written to check my result. I was very happy that day as all my efforts did not go to waste. I shared my results with my family, and everyone felt very happy, congratulated me, and asked for a party. After getting the results, we applied for the real driving licence by paying 315 AED, and I got my licence the very next day.

Driving licence fees in Abu Dhabi

One of the most common questions is: How much does it cost to get a driving licence in Abu Dhabi? The total depends on whether you’re a complete beginner, have previous driving experience, qualify for a special route, or need extra lessons and repeat tests. If you are a woman or a man planning to get your driving licence in Abu Dhabi, here is a general overview of the process. There are 2 types of courses for a driving licence in Abu Dhabi. For the regular course, you may need to pay up to 7000 AED for all the theory classes, practice classes, tests, parking test, etc.  For Golden Chance, you may need to pay something between 3,000 – 4,000 AED for 2 theory classes, simulator class, theory test, road classes, and the final road test. If you are a new driver and want to learn everything about roads and car driving, then you may need the regular course.  But if you have a valid driving license from your home country and you are confident about driving, then you can apply for the Golden Chance. Since I already had a driving license from India, I applied for Golden Chance, as it is not very costly and is quick. But still, it took me at least 40 days to complete the whole process, including learning, tests, and getting the driving license.

Here is the breakdown of my driving license expenses for Golden Chance: –

Expense Cost in AED
Eye test 100
Traffic file opening 250
Theory classes, simulator class, and theory test 1500
Practical road classes 1 class is 65; I took 15 classes, so 15*65
Certificate

Bus booking and other

100

120

Driving License 315

So, the total expense for my driving license is 3,395 AED. That is almost 88,051 INR (Indian rupees). That is why people here think a UAE driving license is their biggest achievement if they pass and they party on that day, because they know how much money and time they spent to get it.

What happens if you fail Golden Chance?

This is the most important point to understand before choosing this route. Golden Chance is a one-time opportunity to take the direct test without the regular practical training hours. If you fail the road test, you will generally need to enrol in practical driving training to build the experience and skill level required to complete the required training and testing steps. But in the regular driving package, you will have 2 attempts. If you fail the first one, you can again do the test in your second or third attempt. But before every road test, you should take some practical classes by paying fees. EDC’s published information describes the alternative route after failure as practical training based on the learner’s experience. That means Golden Chance can save time and money if you pass, but it is not risk-free. My suggestion: if you have several years of driving experience and are confident with roundabouts, parking, lane changes, and UAE road rules, Golden Chance may be an option to explore. If you have limited experience, the regular training route may help you build safer habits and confidence.

Things I Would Recommend to Other Women

If you are thinking about starting your driving journey, here are a few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Don’t compare your progress with others. Everyone learns at a different pace. And to become more confident and proficient in your driving, you will need some time and experience. Small accidents might happen during this process; don’t panic or stop driving completely. Mistakes happen for you to learn more. Never give up and keep on driving. To become a good driver, you will need some experience.
  • Ask questions. If something is unclear during your lessons, speak up. Ask your elders or experienced drivers if you have any doubts regarding driving.
  • Practise consistently. Regular practice can help build confidence and improve your driving skills. Try to drive on roads and highways, in heavy traffic, at night, and go to restaurants, malls, and hospitals by driving yourself. Driving is not something that you can learn by seeing others or reading from books or watching videos. Till you don’t hold the steering wheel and go on the road, you know nothing about driving.
  • Learn for safety, not just to pass. Understanding road signs, lane discipline, parking, and safe distances matters long after the test. So learn to become a good driver, not just to pass the test.
  • Be kind to yourself. One difficult lesson or unsuccessful test does not define your ability. It just says you need a little more time, practice, and confidence. If people around you mock you or see you as useless, never listen to them or believe them. Believe in yourself. Your mind will know if you are capable of this thing or not. You can judge yourself based on this.

It is also perfectly fine to take your time when choosing a driving school and instructor. A learning environment where you feel comfortable can make a meaningful difference. In the initial classes, if you don’t like the way your instructor trains you, you can change the instructor by contacting the driving school. Female instructors are also available for women at Emirates Driving Company. And for the final road test for women, women examiners will sit beside you to test your driving.

Final Thoughts

Looking back on my journey, I see it as more than a driving experience. It is a reminder that confidence often comes after we take the first step, even when we feel uncertain. Getting a driving licence in Abu Dhabi may require patience and preparation, but the feeling of achieving something for yourself makes the journey worthwhile. One of the best things about learning to drive is the confidence you gain along the way. Abu Dhabi has its own driving rhythm, and becoming familiar with its roads, junctions, traffic rules, and parking situations takes practice. Safe driving is about staying calm, being attentive, and making responsible decisions. For women balancing careers, families, studies, and personal goals, driving can become a practical life skill that opens up more choices. If you are a woman thinking about getting your driving licence, my advice is simple: believe in yourself, take it one lesson at a time, and celebrate every small achievement. Because sometimes, a journey towards independence begins with a single turn of the steering wheel.
