Getting a driving license in Abu Dhabi is an exciting milestone, especially if you are new to the UAE or learning to drive for the first time. But before you get behind the wheel for the practical driving test, you must complete an important step: the driving license theory test. When I started my driving license journey, I realized that the theory test was not just about memorizing traffic signs or answering multiple-choice questions. It was about understanding road safety, traffic rules, and the responsibility that comes with driving. In this blog, I’m sharing my experience, preparation tips, and some useful lessons for anyone planning to take the driving license theory test in Abu Dhabi. Like many people, I was excited about the idea of getting my driving license. Having a license in Abu Dhabi can make daily life more convenient, whether it is commuting to work, going shopping, or exploring different places across the UAE. However, I also felt a little nervous because I wasn’t sure what to expect from the theory test. My first step was to understand the licensing process and the theory test requirements. I learned that preparing properly would help me feel more confident and avoid unnecessary stress. I have written a long article on getting a driving license in Abu Dhabi with all the steps, fees, tests, and time taken. Please read that article to understand more about the driving license process in Abu Dhabi.
Since I have 2 kids and can’t leave them alone at home, I prefer Saturday and Sunday for my theory classes and the theory test so my husband can be with my kids while I am out for 3 to 4 hours. There will be 2 theory classes of one hour each and one simulator class of 40 minutes or one hour before you take the theory test, after opening your traffic file, completing your eye test, and registering with the driving institute. You can book all three classes on the same day with no gaps in between to complete all 3 classes within 3 to 4 hours, or book the simulator class the next day or the following week, depending on your preference.
According to me, it is better to read the light vehicle driving license textbook that they give you, either in hard copy or soft copy, after registering with the driving institute, before attending the theory class. This will make you confident in the theory class, and you will understand all the topics more clearly. I did the same, and when the tutor asked some simple questions, I was able to answer most of them and felt very confident. I booked the theory test on Sunday, which is one week after my theory class. If you want, you can book the theory test on the same day as the theory classes. I needed some time to study, so I took one week. In that one week, I studied the textbook twice and did some mock tests online. If you search on Google for a driving license theory test, you will find a few websites that give you a real theory test experience. I did at least 5 of these mock tests to build confidence. In your theory test, you will be given 35 minutes and 45 MCQs (multiple-choice questions) to answer online. In the theory test classroom, each seat will be fitted with a tablet or touch screen where you have to do the online test. The questions will be jumbled. The people around you will get different questions, not the same as yours. The passing mark for this test will be 36. The test is also available in multiple languages. But I preferred English as it is easily understandable. This test will test your driving ability in every way possible. I studied so much for this theory test for almost 2 weeks, but there were still 4 to 5 tricky questions in the theory test that I was not able to answer correctly. All others were very simple, and everything came from what I studied in the textbook, like road signs, road markings, speed limits, and simple Abu Dhabi road rules. And I got 44 answers correct out of 45. They will give you some real-life situations too in the test and ask you what you will do at that time. For me, some of the tricky questions were:-
- How will you park your car when you are on an uphill or downhill slope?
- When your car breaks down or loses its electricity on the highway, what will you do?
- Which car lights will you use when there is dense fog or rain on the road?
- How to park your vehicle in the lay-by area of a highway when there is an emergency?
- How to drive your car during aquaplaning (when there is water on the roads due to rain)?
Preparing for the Theory Test
One of the most important parts of the preparation was understanding the traffic rules rather than simply memorizing answers.
I focused on topics such as:
- Traffic signs: Recognizing warning, regulatory, and informational signs.
- Road markings: Understanding lane markings, stop lines, and road instructions.
- Traffic rules: Learning about speed limits, right of way, lane discipline, and intersections.
- Safe driving: Understanding safe distances, blind spots, and responsible driving habits.
- Hazards and emergencies: Learning how to react to unexpected situations on the road.
My biggest lesson during preparation was that understanding why a particular answer is correct is much more useful than remembering the answer alone.

My Tips for Anyone Taking the Theory Test in Abu Dhabi
If you are preparing for your theory test, here is what I recommend:
- Review the official learning materials provided by your driving school.
- Study traffic signs regularly instead of leaving everything until the last day.
- Take practice tests and review your incorrect answers.
- Learn the meaning of road markings and common traffic situations.
- Get enough rest before the test and give yourself time to arrive.
- Check your test appointment, required documents, and current instructions in advance.
Test arrangements, formats, and requirements may change, so always confirm the latest details with your driving school or the relevant Abu Dhabi licensing authority.

My driving licence journey reminded me that every step is an opportunity to learn. The theory test may feel like a small part of the overall process, but it builds the foundation for safe driving. Whether you are taking the test for the first time or preparing after a previous attempt, don’t let nervousness discourage you. Study consistently, understand the rules, and trust your preparation. For me, the experience was about more than passing an exam. It was the beginning of becoming a more confident, aware, and responsible driver. If you are also preparing for the theory test, I wish you all the best and believe in yourself. Learn so much that you become confident enough to answer any type of question that might come in your theory test.
